Sigiswald Kuijken
Sigiswald Kuijken has conducted a number of concerts with conventional orchestras recently in repertoire from Beethoven to Brahms and has also taken up the Violoncello da spalla (also known as the Viola pomposo) following years of research brought about by the fact that ‘cello parts were never named as such and only used the lower register when there was a separate part provided. He has even constructed his own instrument. Programmes in which he plays this instrument include Vivaldi; I quarto stagioni (soloist Francois Fernandez, violin) played one musician to each part and Domenico Sarro; La furba e lo Sciocco (a Neapolitan intermezzo) with two singers and 2 dancers, (production in costume) and Bach; Brandenburg Concertos 1 – 6.
