Marie Angel
Marie Angel was born in Australia. With Opera Factory in London and Zürich she has performed a varied and wide repertoire including Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, Poppea in The Coronation of Poppea, Dido/Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas, Calisto/Juno in Cavalli's La Calisto, Denise in Tippett's The Knot Garden, Pretty Polly in Birtwistle's Punch and Judy, Iphigenia in Gluck's Iphigenias, and various pieces by Kurt Weill. Many of these productions have been televised.
She has appeared with English National Opera as Euridice in Monteverdi's Orfeo, Queen Tye in Glass's Akhnaten, Oracle of the Dead in Birtwistle's The Mask of Orpheus and the Countess in Zimmermann's Die Soldaten. For Welsh National Opera she sang Queen of the Night in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, for Opera North, Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème and for Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Jo Ann in Tippett's New Year. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House as Morgan le Fay in Birtwistle's Gawain and released on CD by Collins Classics.
She has sung Queen Tye for Houston Grand Opera and for New York City Opera and she appeared in the new opera Esmee by Theo Leovendi for the Holland Festival. In her native Australia, Marie Angel sang the role of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni for Victoria State Opera and gave recitals and concerts at the Barossa Music Festival. She made her debut at Netherlands Opera singing the role of Esmerelda in the world premiere of Louis Andriessen's Rosa, directed by Peter Greenaway. She also worked with Peter Greenaway on the film and subsequent CD of Prospero's Books.
Other performances include Recital I by Luciano Berio at the South Bank, London, Ligeti's Aventures/Nouvelles Aventures in Paris conducted by Pierre Boulez, a piece she has also performed in London and concerts at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna and the role of Oracle of the Dead in Birtwistle's The Mask of Orpheus.
Marie Angel sang roles in Kagel's Aus Deutschland in Amsterdam, Vienna and Basel She has also sung the role of Fortunata in Maderna's Satyricon at Basel Opera and in the revival of Rosa at Netherlands Opera. Other engagements have included Die Soldaten and Aus Deutschland in Venice, and The Merry Widow, all for Basel Opera.
Recent productions include Satyricon in Italy, Michael Nyman’s Facing Goya in Spain, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail at La Fenice Venice, John Cage’s Europera at the Niedersächsische Staatstheater Hannover, Thwaite at the Almeida and Aldeburgh Festivals and Poppea at Theatre Basel. She is currently singing Cixi in Willem Jeth’s new opera Hotel de Peking at the National Reisopera in The Netherlands.
