Andrea Licata has conducted many opera and symphonic orchestras in Italy and abroad, including the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Orchestra Regionale della Toscana, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Festival of Two Worlds Orchestra of Spoleto and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. In Spoleto he conducted the world premiere of Sarah, the contemporary opera based on the life of Marilyn Monroe composed by Paul Vy and directed by Petrika Ionesco.
In 1989 Hans Werner Henze invited Andrea Licata to inaugurate the Cantiere Internazionale in Montepulciano. From 1991 to 1994 he was the Musical director of Theatre Vincenzo Bellini of Catania, where he conducted concerts and operas such as Rigoletto, Aida, Bianca e Fernando, The Saint of Bleeker Street (Menotti) and La Gioconda. In March 1992 he conducted La Gioconda at the Rome Opera and Aida that same year at the second Caracalla Festival. The opera was broadcast on RAI national television.
Dividing his time between the Teatro Bellini of Catania and The Rome Opera, Andrea Licata conducted Adelson e Salvini, Don Pasquale, Il trovatore, Aida, Verdi’s Requiem and Don Carlo. In June 1994 he conducted Jacquerie by Gino Marinuzzi (the first Italian full-length production). In 1995 he conducted Un ballo in maschera and Tosca in Catania, Turandot in Ljubljana and Don Carlo at the Opera Theatre of Istanbul. In 1996 he conducted Tosca with the Baltimore Opera in his US. In 1998 he conducted Norma in Messina, where he has also conducted Un ballo in maschera, Simon Boccanegra and Turandot. In October that year he opened the Baltimore Opera Company season with Cavalleria rusticana and I pagliacci, followed by Norma.
During 1999 he conducted Cavalleria rusticana and I pagliacci in Seville, Aida in New Orleans, Lucia di Lammermoor in Messina and Alahor en Granada by Donizetti (Italian premiere) in the Teatro Massimo, Palermo. Between 2000 and 2002 he conducted La Boheme and Tosca at the Puccini Festival Torre del Lago, Il trovatore at the Sant’Ander Festival in Spain, Aida in Avenches, Switzerland, Nabucco, Tosca and Turandot in Las Palmas, Canary Islands and Turandot, Tosca, Aida, Madama Butterfly and Rigoletto in Baltimore.
In recent seasons he has conducted Aida, Tosca, Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La fanciulla del West in Baltimore. In 2003/4 he made his Australian debut conducting a new production of Norma for Opera Australia in Melbourne with great success and was immediately re-invited for the 2004/5 season when he conducted Nabucco and La boheme. In 2005/6 he conducted Un ballo in maschera in Bari, La traviata at the Teatro Regio di Parma, Andrea Chenier at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Madama Butterfly with Opera Australia and La boheme in Baltimore. In 06/07 he performed Rigoletto for Opera Australia, Ernani in Messina and Tosca in Baltimore. In 2007, he conducted a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor for the New Zealand Festival and Il trittico with Opera Australia. In 2008 he conducted Un Ballo in Maschera in Sydney and Melbourne. Last season he conducted Aida in Baltimore, Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci for Opera Australia and made his British Operatic debut with Tosca for Opera North.
In recent seasons he has made his debut for Welsh National Opera conducting the McVicar production of La traviata, returned to Sydney for Tosca and he also conducted La traviata at the Teatro de la Maestranza, Seville.
Future plans include re-engagements at Welsh National Opera (Il trovatore) and Opera North (Carmen) and his debut in Scandinavia with Norma for the Royal Opera, Stockholm.
Among his recordings are Bianca e Fernando (Nuova Era), Adelson e Salvini (Nuova Era), Jacquerie by Gino Marinuzzi (Nuova Era), Preludes, Symphonies and Intermezzos from Italian Operas with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev, Jeux d’Enfants by Bizet and Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London (CD).
